Using Microsoft Office can get expensive: The stand-alone versions of the software, which are becoming increasingly rare, start around $150 and only go up from there. App subscriptions start at $7 per month or $70 per year, and prices quickly increase for professional versions of the software. And while future versions of the software may likely continue to be the same price, Office still comes with a hefty price tag for consumers.Related content. We get it: It’s a lot to spend on basic productivity tools. But there is some good news. If you don’t need all the latest, premium features, you can still save quite a bit of money on Microsoft Office. Use the free web and mobile appsMicrosoft has been gradually expanding the number of apps you can use online for free, and now offers an impressive suite that can easily merge with downloaded apps, if necessary, and has plenty of functionality for the average project. It’s also really easy to sign up., pick the app that you want (scroll down for all options), and log into your Microsoft account to get started. If you don’t have a Microsoft account, signing up is easy — plus, since you need Office Online, it’s a good idea to create one anyway.
This allows you to use Word, Excel, Calendar, and other traditional Microsoft apps. It also gives you access to more niche apps, like Sway, an interactive report/presentation app; People, an advanced, Skype-friendly contact list; and Docs.com, for uploading and sharing documents. So, if this is all here and available for free, why does the rest of this article exist? Because while these apps are useful, they’re also limited to only work for very basic functions. They don’t offer the full features that provides and, of course, you need an online connection to use them. It’ll work for simple tasks, like putting together a simple document — but it won’t work for more complicated ones.
Get Office through your schoolIf you are part of an education organization (student, faculty, or staff), and see if you can get a version of Office 365 for free. Microsoft extends this to all students, but your school needs to be signed up first or just get very lucky. If your school isn’t part of the program, an administrator can sign you up easily.
The benefits are basically the same as the trial version of the software, with the addition of a separate Class Notebook for class management, unlimited online meetings, and intranet customization options. If you just graduated, you may not be able to get Office 365 for free, but you can get it at a very low cost. Allows you to get Office 365 Personal for just $1 per month for 12 months, a great deal for those starting out in their professional environments. Try a free 30-day trial of Office 365Ahh, the free trial lives on. If you want to experience Office 365 for free, you can — for a full month. Just and sign up. The trial allows you to download Office 365 on up to five PCs or Macs, and lets you to use the Office mobile apps on up to five tablets and five phones. Plus, you get 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage for each user to experiment with.
The trial includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other apps. The downside is that you only get a month of service, which obviously isn’t beneficial if you need long-term access. Another caveat is that Microsoft requires your financial account information before the download and will start automatically charging you after the month is up, which can make disentangling yourself from Office 365 a little difficult (which is the point). It’s a good way to try out the full version of Office 365 to see if it offers enough to be worth the price tag but be ready to cancel if you don’t want to be charged.Note: Some product offers can be a little tricky, like the “Try Office 365 Personal for free” hook on the Microsoft Store. Be warned that this is still referring to the one-month trial version, even if it doesn’t come right out and say so. And don’t try those “free product key” websites, which tend to be pretty sketchy and rarely deliver.

TheBigBoots, A shabby substitute for WunderlistI've been using Wumderlist for years and have absolutely loved that product. So, while I'm happy for the team that they were aquired by Microsoft, I am really frustrated with the feature set of MS To Do as compared to Wunderlist. For example, Wunderlist let you type in a task with a bulit in reminder.
Set up a call with client x at 11:00am) and it would show the task as 'Set up call with Client X' with a reminder attatched to that task which would trigger at your specified time. With MS To Do you it will ignore any time parameters you input as text. You have to go into a separate screen and set up a reminder manually. That's stupidly inefficient for an efficiency-focussed app.
MS task also doesn't seem to remove completed items like wonderlist did, so your lists become cluttered and hard to parse. And, the reminders, when they are set, often get stuck in a recursive loop and cannot be dismissed without force quitting the app.
Initially I thought MS bought Wunderlist to invest in it and make it better. But it's clear, they just wanted to kill a great little competetor to release their own garbage version.
I am so disappointed. Clearly I need to find something else. RIP Wunderlist. You were truly a great little product and I miss you terribly. Jason Rachels, Great App for GTD MethodBest app I have found for use with the GTD method.

I originally used Wunderlist and it was great. But this one is getting the latest and greatest updates that allow it to work much better with ios shortcuts so you can program your iphone so that you can add a task to a specific list by voice on the go without even looking at your phone.
If you do GTD, you know that getting ideas out of your head and into the right list is key and to be able to do that while driving or as your walking to a meeting is a real improvement. Also, every one of my direct reports uses it (because I asked them to) and that allows them and me to have a shared running list of tasks that I have delegated to them that we can keep tabs on, share comments with each other, etc. And since it's all in To Do, that means that I can take tasks that were on my lists and simply drag and drop them into their list whenever I choose to delegate one of those tasks.
Coach Laz, Really like ToDo but.Really like this app and all that I see Microsoft doing with it but I don't understand why this app doesn't have the 'Today', 'Week' and 'All'categories set up yet. I like the 'My Day' category, but we need something that reminds us what is due today sorted by folder so we can deal with it by location or list (GTD method) if we are going to be as efficient as possible.
I hope this is coming soon, it really is the last piece to making this the best ToDo app out there. There are already so many good so many good features with this app.the way that Microsoft has integrated it into Outlook really can be a game changer if what we were able to drag and drop into the App would be sorted by 'Today,' 'Week,' and 'All' with the option to sort them all by folder/list.Love your products, Godspeed.
